Alumni Awarded W. G. Simms,
L. P. Jones
Dr. Miriam J. Shillingsburg, the 1998 William Gilmore Simms Visiting Research Professor, has spent the summer working in the South Caroliniana Library transcribing and editing five lectures written by Simms in 1856-1857. Dr. Shillingsburg, Dean of Arts and Sciences and Professor of English, Lamar University, Beaumont Texas, received her master's and doctoral degrees from USC's English department in 1966 and 1969.
Dr. Jack Hayes, this year's Lewis P. Jones Fellow, and Dr. Miriam J. Shillingsburg, the 1998 William Gilmore Simms Visiting Research Professor.
The Simms Visiting Research Professorship Endowment Fund was established by Simms' granddaughter Mary C. Simms Oliphant and continued by his great-granddaughter Mrs. Alester G. Furman III and other family members. It recognizes and honors the noted nineteenth-century American literary giant. To date, endowment funds have been used to restore one of Simms' personal scrapbooks, which had fallen into disrepair, and to finance the summer research projects of visiting research professors.
Dr. Jack Hayes, this year's Lewis P. Jones Fellow, is doing further work on his 1972 dissertation, "South Carolina and the New Deal, 1932-1938," with a view to publish a book by the same title. Hayes has been going through manuscript and printed material that were not in the library's collection at the time of his doctoral work.
