Sanford Barker letter to Brown & Ives

Letter, 18 February 1813, of J. Sanford Barker, Charleston, to Messrs. Brown & Ives, Providence, R.I., discussing the escalating market price of rice and reporting the capture of a merchant ship by British warships—"by a Cartel arriv'd yesterday from Nassau it appears the Ship Geo[rge] & Mary was captur'd by two Brigs of War and sent to Nassau in Decem[ber] last—seeing the account in the newspapers I have been ever since in search of the Passengers to ascertain particulars and am sorry to add that from Verbal information I much fear the Ship and Cargo will be finally condemn'd."
