Scope and Content:
36.25 linear feet comprising the papers of Palmetto Alliance, Inc., of Columbia, are arranged in six series: Administrative Files, Nuclear Power Project Files, Consumer Advocacy Project Files, Topical Files, Related Environmental/Consumer Advocacy Organization Files, and Newsclipping Files. Administrative Files consist of correspondence, minutes, appointment books, membership mailing lists, financial records, and promotional literature directly concerned with the organizational structure of Palmetto Alliance. Nuclear Power Project Files contain a variety of materials relating to Palmetto Alliance's opposition to the licensing and construction of nuclear-powered electrical generating facilities in S.C. and N.C., namely Catawba Nuclear Station, Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant, and Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station, and more particularly documenting their official stance as an intervenor in hearings before the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the S.C. Public Service Commission. Other materials represented in the Nuclear Power Project Files include financial/legal agreements between Duke Power and other utilities companies concerning the ownership, fueling, and operation of Catawba Nuclear Station as well as emergency preparedness, environmental impact, and technical safety studies of the facility. Consumer Advocacy Project Files reflect the involvement of Palmetto Alliance and staff members Michael Lowe and Robert Guild, on behalf of Palmetto Alliance and other organizations such as the Midlands Welfare Rights Organization and the S.C. Welfare Rights Organization, as intervenors in electric and gas utilities rate hike hearings before the S.C. Public Service Commission. Topical Files contain reference materials collected by the staff of Palmetto Alliance and relating to nuclear-powered electrical generating plants, nuclear waste management and disposal, and governmental agencies charged with the oversight of nuclear waste. Related Environmental/Consumer Advocacy Organization Files provide information on other S.C. groups allied with Palmetto Alliance in their opposition to nuclear power proliferation and sharing their concern with environmental and consumer advocacy issues. Newsclipping Files include news articles on nuclear power, waste, and facilities in S.C. and major figures involved in the promotion and opposition of nuclear energy.
