Summary
Consisting of correspondence, land and legal papers, and photographs documenting the lives of four generations of this York County family; including such materials as lease agreements signed by Catawba tribal representatives, commissioners reports, minutes of meetings of Indian landholders, and correspondence reflecting Indian affairs along the North Carolina-South Carolina boundary; and letters, 1810-1827, from James Moore, onetime resident of York District who removed to the old southwest and eventually settled near Natchez, first working as an overseer but later owning a plantation.
Includes Moore's letters to his brother-in-law, David Hutchison, discussing military problems facing planters in the Mississippi delta during the War of 1812 and comment re the difference in agricultural prospects between Mississippi and South Carolina; correspondence and legal documents reflecting the mercantile and banking interests and investments of Hiram Hutchison (ca. 1790-1856), son of David Hutchison, including letters, 1853-1854, between Hiram Hutchison, John L. Manning, and James H. Thornwell re the establishment of a scholarship at South Carolina College.
Also includes materials re the settlement of the estate of Hiram Hutchison and the marking of his grave at Greenwood Cemetery, New York; correspondence and miscellaneous documents re the work of Adolphus Eugene Hutchison (1827- 1905) with the Indian Land Chronicle, a York County newspaper, and the establishment in 1880 of the Rock Hill Cotton Factory, the state's first steam-powered cotton mill, which A.E. Hutchison served as president; and World War I letters from Hiram Hutchison (1895-1950) written from Camp Sevier, Ft. Sill, Ft. Bliss, and various locations in France and England, relating details of his military service in the 118th Infantry, his wounding and hospitalization, and return to South Carolina in 1919.
