Biographical Note:
William H. Patterson was elected the 24th president of the University of South Carolina in 1974. Patterson joined the USC faculty in history and engineering in 1943, and held a number of academic and administrative positions during a period of dynamic academic and physical growth at Carolina. He also played a significant role in the establishment of the University's regional campus system. Patterson served as USC's chief administrative officer (Provost) from 1961 until becoming president.
