Schuyler L. and Yvonne Moore Endowed Summer Internship

Our competitive annual summer internship carries a stipend of $2,250 and is awarded to a graduate student enrolled in an archival education program outside of South Carolina. Projects require a minimum of 135 hours and vary depending on SCPC needs and the interests of the intern. Typical internships may include arranging and describing a collection or a series within a major collection, creating an exhibit, completing a digitization project, or transcribing oral history interviews. The internship is funded by the Schuyler L. and Yvonne Moore Endowment. Housing is not provided as part of the award and must be arranged by the candidate.

Unpaid Internships (available year-round)
We welcome both graduate and undergraduate interns with a strong interest in politics, history, and government. We assign projects based on the intern’s interests. Duties may include: arranging manuscript collections, inventorying incoming material, assisting researchers, working special events, blogging, digitizing material, preparing exhibits, etc. Lengths of internships vary. We require at least 40 hours, though students receiving course credit may need to work 120+ hours. Interns start at the beginning of a semester or summer session.

Student Assistant Positions
Each semester, we employ 3-4 student assistants, usually from USC’s graduate and undergraduate history and library science programs. We place a good deal of responsibility upon our assistants.

After a period of orientation, they will generally work at complex tasks with moderate independence, and be required to exhibit thoughtful judgment. We work in a collegial environment and treat our assistants as professionals. We trust applicants will consider an assistantship as an opportunity to develop their research and writing skills. For those who are seeking an archival career, it is an excellent opportunity to gain real work experience and a valuable professional reference. Examples of student projects are similar to projects listed in the internship descriptions above. In addition, student assistants often pull boxes and make copies for researchers, help bring in new material as it arrives, publicize and work at SCPC events, and perform other duties as needed. A majority of an assistant’s time is usually spent processingcollections.

Graduate students have the option of salaried or hourly assistantships. Each option has advantages and drawbacks, so the student should consider carefully which will better suit his or her circumstances. Salaried assistantships come with the possibility of receiving in-state tuition. Undergraduates work in hourly positions only. Assistants generally are asked to make a commitment to SCPC for at least two semesters, and we prefer graduate students to work 20 hours per week. Summer hours are available and encouraged.

To apply, email a resume, recent writing sample, and cover letter to: scpc@mailbox.sc.edu. Questions, call 803-777-0577. Deadlines vary between mid-fall and mid-spring. Please contact SCPC to inquire about openings.
