Conference Hotel and Accommodations:

A block of rooms has been reserved for the conference at the Courtyard by Marriott, 630 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC 29201 (1-803-799-7800 ), close by the library.

Rooms at the Courtyard conference rate are $133.09 for one person per night including tax, and $137.76 a night for two people in a room including tax, both including breakfast. This rate applies only during the period April 11 through April 15 (Wednesday-Sunday); any additional nights before or after that period would be at a higher rate.

Bookings must be made by conferees directly with the hotel, not through the university. To get the conference rate, book before March 13, 2012, and say you are attending the Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies conference: www.marriott.com/caecd or call: 1-803-799-7800. Be sure to specify the Courtyard Downtown, as other Marriott hotels are at a distance.

Other nearby hotels include the Inn at USC (Pendleton St and Pickens), Claussen's Inn (Greene St near Five Points), and the Clarion Town House (Gervais St at Pickens); in these alternative hotels, request the “University visitor rate.” For more information on these alternative hotels, click here.

Location and Travel:

All conference sessions are to be held in the University of South Carolina’s new Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library, on the University’s main campus, in Columbia, the state capital. The University of South Carolina was founded in 1801 as South Carolina College, and the conference will include time for optional guided tours of the historic central campus and a nearby historic house. Conferees may also want to explore Columbia's many historic attractions.

For travel by road, Columbia is at the intersection of I-20, I-77, and I-26. For travel by air, Columbia Metropolitan Airport has direct flights from many major cities, as well as connections through Charlotte and Atlanta. The airport is about 5 miles from campus; the conference hotel provides a complimentary shuttle between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.. A cab from the airport costs around $15. Charlotte Douglas Airport is approx. 95 miles drive from Columbia; if airline connections from Charlotte are not convenient, it may be worth considering shuttle service or car rental (linked here).
