Business Booklist 1997-11

On February 12, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"Managing Risk in International Business"
by Ephraim Clark and Bernard Marois
(International Thomson Business Press: London)
[HG 4027.5 .C584 1996]

"This is a comprehensive guide to the major sources of risk encountered in activities such as importing, exporting, borrowing, lending and investing in new markets. It provides managers with an understanding of both traditional and advanced new risk measurement techniques borrowed from modern portfolio and option pricing theory.

The first part of the book defines and analyzes economic, financial, political and currency risk. Parts two and three explain how these risks are assessed and managed to enable strategic decisions to be made. The emphasis throughout is on practical applications and experience using case studies and topical examples such as the Mexican peso crisis of 1994."

"Field Casework"
by Lisa K. Gundry and Aaron A. Buchko
(Sage Publications: Thousand Oaks, CA)
[HD 69 .C6 G853 1996]

"This monograph addresses the common questions and concerns that students engaging in consulting projects for small and startup businesses have. Offering practical and direct guidance, this informative text supports and directs the reader from the initial project assignment and client meeting to the closing presentation and exit meeting. Primary chapters are devoted to establishing client relationships, conducting the information search, maintaining a cohesive student consulting team, and developing recommendations for the client business. A unique feature of the book is the incorporation of student reactions, responses and advice in each chapter. Information about the role of the Small Business Administration, and Small Business Institutes, confidentiality, and ethical considerations is included in two appendices."

"Interest Rates and Budget Deficits"
by Kanhaya Gupta and Bakhtiar Moazzami
(Routledge: London)
[HJ 2043 .G86 1996]

"Does fear of higher inflation lead to higher interest rates? For the past decade, rising interest rates have dominated economic headlines. It now seems that the persistently low rates of the 1970s have given way to persistently high rates in the 1980s and 1990s. This book explores this phenomenon and discusses various aspects of interest rates across a range of developed countries. In particular, the authors examine: the relationship between high budget deficits, debts and high interest rates; the role of inflation expectations and the Fisher hypothesis; empirical evidence from eleven advanced economies - Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and the USA."

"The Changing Social Benefits in Russian Enterprises"
from OECD
(OECD: Paris)
[HD 4928 .N6 C48 1996]

"Worker compensation in the Russian Federation has traditionally included a large package of social benefits. But these are decreasing, even if they continue to be important in certain industries and regions. This book looks at the restructuring of the ownership, management and function of enterprise-based social assets and how employer-provided services are granted, in light of potentially desirable changes in the social protection system in the Russian federation."

"This amazingly comprehensive book provides a luicd explanation of modern macroeconomic theory and applies the theory to a wide range of international issues. Read this accurate, unbiased summary - then ... YOU BE THE JUDGE! Has the tax revolution finally reached Congress? Will tax reform really lower your taxes, or will it cost more? Can anyone make sense of all the competing claims and plans? Which of the current proposals will best help stimulate the economy ... encourage savings ... keep inflation down? Who can you believe? How can you participate in the tax debate?"

"Forecasting Financial Markets: Exchange Rates, Interest Rates and Asset Management"
edited by Christian Dunis
(John Wiley and Sons: Chichester, UK)
[HG 4523 .F67 1996]

"Today's financial markets are characterized by a large number of participants, with different appetites for risk, different time horizons, different motivations and reactions to unexpected news. The mathematical techniques and models used in the forecasting of financial markets have therefore grown ever more sophisticated as traders, analysts and investors seek to gain an edge on their competitors.

Written by leading international researchers and practitioners, this book focuses on three major themes of today's state of the art financial research: modeling with high frequency data, the information content of volatility markets, and applications of neural networks and genetic algorithms to financial time series."

Examples of the many important matters covered in the text include: the implications of West European economic and political intergration; the prospects and problems posed by East European countries; theories of international trade, financial management and investment; national and supranational control of multinationals; competition, privatisation and deregulation of industry and trade; market entry strategies and techniques; and, international employee relations and the management of expatriate staff."

"The European Union and National Industrial Policy"
edited by Hussein Kassim and Anand Menon
(Routledge: London)
[HD 3616 .E8 E874 1996]

"The authors investigate the impact of EU initiatives on the policies traditionally pursued by the four larger members in these areas. In doing so, they shed light on how national actors have responded to the growing importance of the EU and how relationships between actors - especially governments and state-owned companies - have been affected. The contibutors use their findings to assess the impact of the EU on state autonomoy and to evaluate claims that have been made about the consequences of European integration for the member states."

"Elusive Development"
by Marshall Wolfe
(Zed Books: London)
[HD 78 .W64 1996]

"A stimulating book by an exceptionally well qualified, honest and sophisticated participant-observer in UN development programmes and debates. The author suggests that there are no general recipes other than recognizing the inevitable social tensions, contradictions and hypocrisies involved and attempting to confront them in each historical situation as humanistically as possible. His discussion of the issues is invariably clear, well informed, insightful and provocative."

Business Booklist [1997 - 14]

On February 16, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"The Creative Trainer"
by Michael Lawlor and Peter Handley
(McGraw-Hill: London)
[HF 5549.5 .T7 L34 1996]

"This book will show new and creative approaches to training people within organizations. It is based on the principles of Accelerated Learning, previously applied to language learning. Full of unusual and innovative methods for immediate use, this book will enable trainers to make their courses more enjoyable and successful. It discusses the recent discoveries on how the two hemispheres of the brain operate, guiding trainers on how to use their ideas and techniques to enrich and empower their training programs, as well as including guidance on putting ideas into practice."

"Managing Structural Deficit Reduction"
from OECD
(OECD: Paris)
[HJ 2043 .M33 1996]

"A high budget deficit is untenable in the long term and there is general agreement that these imbalances must be reduced. However cyclical improvements are not sufficient. New measures must be taken constantly to redress the structural component of budget deficits by reducing expenses or increasing revenues.

This publication presents the results of a survey of strategies and techniques being applied in Member countries to reduce or eliminate structural deficits. It consists of a general overview of the changes which have taken place, and detailed chapters on the policies adopted by individual Member countries."

"Managing Product Development"
edited by Toshihiro Nishiguchi
(Oxford University Press: New York)
[HF 515.153 .M334 1996]

"This book brings together the work of leading international researchers in the field of product innovation and development. Competitive success between firms nearly always depends on what new products they can develop and bring to market. Some chapters examine broad issues related to the impact of information technology and the role that social factors play in the successful development of products: they also describe the ways that Japanese firms develop products internationally. Other chapters explore product development in the automobile, biotechnology, photolithographic, and textile machinery industries. The book thus provides a guide to successful product development for firms in diverse industries."

"Expanding Access to Financial Services in Latin America"
edited by Miguel Basch and Camilo Morales
(Inter-American Development Bank: Washington, DC)
[HG 187 .A2 E96 1995]

"Even though small and medium-sized businesses constitute a significant segement of the leading market in Latin America, the credit potential of these firms has long been neglected. Today, encouraging such businesses to make greater use of banking services and become more attractive borrowers is essential to expanding the region's banking industry. This monograph examines how macroeconomic conditions and adjustment processes have affected efforts to incorporate small businesses into national financial systems. Constraints include restrictive monetary policies, inflation and high interest rates, as well as the informal and under-capitalized nature of a sector traditionally excluded from access to banking services. Policy recommendations from case studies on Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Peru and Uruguay point to the importance of market-based allocation tools and a growing role of nongovernment organizations at different levels of the credit management process."

Business Booklist [1997 - 15]

On February 18, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"Poverty in Canada"
by Christopher A. Sarlo
(The Fraser Institute: Vancouver, BC)
[HC 120 .P6 S27 1996]

"In this monograph the author develops an alternative approach to defining and measuring proverty - one based on the cost of necessities. He argues persuasively that this basic needs approach gives us a more relevant and useful distinction between the poor and non-poor and permits legitimate intertemporal and international comparisons."

"Multimedia Tools for Managers"
by Bohdan Szuprowicz
(amacom: New York)
[HF 5718 .S983 1997]

"This book is a quick-start manual for readers who need to understand interactive multimedia communications and its significance to their organization's future. "America's Best"
by Theodore B. Kinni
(John Wiley and Sons: New York)
[TS 149 .K53 1996]

"This book is based on the collective lessons of 'Industry Week's' America's Best Plants award winners. The components of successful manufacturing described here are taken directly from their experiences. It is a unique reference that reveals an integrated system of success, innumerable individual solutions, a statistical profile, and a self-assessment to see how you measure up to the best. The book is also a celebration of manufacturing excellence."

"John Kenneth Galbraith"
by James Ronald Stanfield
(St. Martin's Press: New York)
[HB 119 .G33 S73 1996]

"The scope of this book is standard. The aim is to provide an intellectual portrait of John Kenneth Galbraith. He may well be the most famous economist of the last half century. Yet there is no doubt that he also represents a very obscure American institutionalist tradition. This paradox the author cannot solve for the reader. Perhaps it is merely a by-product of Galbraith's desire to augment his sales by avoiding academic notation or by exaggerating the originality of his work. Perhaps his success speaks to a desire of the public for literate relevant economics in an age of intense formalism in the profession."

Business Booklist [1997 - 16]

On February 24, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"Risky Business: Managing Employee Violence in the Workplace"
by Lynne Falkin McClure
(The Haworth Press: New York)
[HF 5549.5 .E43 M39 1996]

"This book tells in plain language the specific behaviors that indicate an employee has the potential to become violent, and it tells managers what to do - and what not to do - to prevent workplace violence. The author describes in clear detail the eight major categories of behavioral clues to violence and includes anecodotes from work settings to help managers and others identify potentially violent employees. Most importantly, she emphasizes what managers must and must not do when they see these 'clues' in an employee's behavior and how to create and maintain a work environment that is more likely to protect everyone."

"Building a Corporate Internet Strategy: The IT Manager's Guide"
by Amit K. Maitra
(VMR: New York)
[HD 30.37 .M35 1996]

"This book is an information technology (IT) manager's guide to building and maintaining a successful business site, one that fully (and securely) enhances all aspects of the enterprise - sales, marketing, customer service, human resources, finance, and more. In one concise, authoritative volume, it offers practical, proven courses of action (backed by real-life case studies) for taking the Internet for all it's worth. Using this guide, you will be able to create an Internet plan that has the full support of business managers.

From this monograph you can obtain the information you need to: realize the highest return on your Internet investment; document the costs and benefits of being online in dollars-and-cents terms; get up to speed on crucial technical issues, including Web server security, inbound data activities, restricted information access, and electronic ordering and selling; develop an efficient, farsighted corporate online policy; and, construct your own Intranet - your company's exclusive, needs-based online universe!"

"Interactive Marketing: The Future Present"
edited by Edward Forrest and Richard Mizerski
(NTC Business Books: Lincolnwood, IL)
[HF 5415.1264 .F67 1996]

"The purpose of this book is to examine the nature and scope of impact that interactive communication technologies are (and will be) having on the world of marketing and marketing communications. The editors recognize, at the outset, the impossibility of doing much more than scratching the surface. The dizzying speed of change dates "futuristic" predictions virtually as they are made. That limitation, however, helps explain why they have included the articles presented here. For while the authors describe and discuss many of the new and truly amazing technologies and applications being used today and being anticipated tomorrow, they focus on how we need to think about them. In some cases this new world of interactivity means doing things in totally new ways. In others, it doesn't. But in all instances, it means rethinking approaches and strategies and melding the best of the traditional with the new."

"Intranet Business Strategies"
by Mellanie Hills
(John Wiley and Sons: New York)
[HD 30.385 .H55 1997]

"This book is for business and IT managers interested in helping their companies profit from the many advantages of a private, Web-based network. It's also a complete, step-by-step guide for all those involved in planning and implementing their organization's intranet. With the help of case studies from 13 leading companies, including JCPenney, Bell Atlantic, EDS, Texas Instruments, and Turner Broadcasting, the author: analyzes the advantages, disadvantages, costs, and benefits of an intranet; helps you determine whether your company is ready for an intranet; provides you with a step-by-step plan for implementing an intranet along with detailed checklists; plus many, many more ideas."

Business Booklist [1997 - 17]

On February 24, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library has obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"Competition and New Technology in the Electric Power Sector"
from OECD
(OECD: Paris)
[HD 9685 .A2 C73 1996]

"Growing competition in the electric power sector is reducing costs to utilities and their customers. But it may also weaken incentives for longer-term research, development and demonstration efforts that are needed to put in place cheaper, cleaner technologies for producing power in the future. This survey, prepared by experts from ten different countries reporting to the International Energy Agency's Committee on Energy Research and Technology, offers a range of current views on the key long-run RD&D needs of electric utilities and the extent to which competition will reduce utility efforts to meet these needs. It also examines measures that utilities and governments might take to ensure that needed technology development in the electric power sectors continues."

"Doing Business with Spain"
from The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain
(Kogan Page: London)
[HF 3687 .D64 1996]

"Spain has developed a thriving liberalized economy, which is now well regarded by international companies and investors. Offering exciting opportunities for foreign investment, Spanish firms are ideal partners for organizations wishing to build their positions in both the European Union and the rapidly expanding markets of Latin America. This unique book, addressed to investors, corporate executives, analysts and government officials, offers an authoritative overview of all aspects of business practice with Spain."

"A Terrible Anger: The 1934 Waterfront and General Strikes in San Francisco"
by David Selvin
(Wayne State University Press: Detroit)
[HD 5325 .L62 1934 .S35 1996]

"In the endless struggle of American workers for recognition and respect in modern industrial society, the Pacific Coast maritime strike and the San Francisco General Strikes in 1934 stand as crucial and symbolic events. The strikes released the long-simmering rage against anti-unionism that had until then shielded the nation's great industries from workers' demands. In this book the author presents a narrative history of the strikes. Unlike other labor historians who have stressed the importance of radical groups involved in the strikes, he addresses the impact on unions, owners, government, and the daily press."

"Intellectual Capital"
by Annie Brooking
(International Thomson Business Press: London)
[HD 53 .B76 1996]

"There is a new awareness in the boardroom. Across the world, major corporations are beginning to realize that their most valuable assets are intangible. They have discovered that the value of the corporation is no longer the buildings, the machinery or even the products, but customer loyalty, the ability to collaborate with business partners, intellectual property, electronic infrastructures and the innovative potential and know-how of employees. They have discovered that their greatest asset is intellectual capital.

Read this book and discover how to manage, control and record the value of the intangible assets in your business. The book provides a practical framework to audit intellectual capital in your organization - learn what it is, what it's worth and how to manage it."

Business Booklist [1997 - 18]

On February 27, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library has obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"Competitive Governments: An Economic Theory of Politics and Public Finance"
by Albert Breton
(Cambridge University Press)
[HJ 131 .B74 1996]

"This monograph explores in a systematic way the hypothesis that governments are internally competitive, that they are competitive in their relations with one another and in their relations with other institutions in society that, like them, supply consuming households with goods and services. The author contends that competition not only serves to bring the political system to an equilibrium but that it also leads to a revelation of the households' true demand functions for publicly provided goods and services and to the molding of a link between the quantities and the qualities demanded and supplied and the taxprices paid for these goods and services. In the real world where information is costly, the links may not be first-best, but they will be efficient if competition is vigorous."

"Financial Development Policy and Growth"
by Jean-Claude Berthelemy and Aristomene Varoudakis
(OECD: Paris)
[HG 173 .B49 1996]

"This book provides conclusive evidence, using econometric techniques and country case studies, that the relationship between financial development and overall economic growth is reciprocal. By aligning these two factors, the authors identify four "convergence clubs", groups of economies heading for different growth regimes. Identifing the category into which a country falls can help policy makers devise the most beneficial policies to avoid the poverty trap and resume a growth trajectory. The study concludes that these policies must include the creation of an appropriate macroeconomic environment for developing the financial sector and building stable institutions."

Business Booklist [1997 - 19]

On March 3, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library has obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"Roger Dawson's Secrets of Power Negotiating"
by Roger Dawson
(Career Press: Hawthorne, NJ)
[HD 58.6 .D39 1995]

"You have probably heard that the objective of a negotiation is to create a win-win solution. Power Negotiating takes a different position. Power Negotiating teaches you how to win at the negotiating table, but leave the other person feeling that he or she won. The author will teach you how to do this and do it in such a way that the other side permanently feels that they won."

"Corporate Therapy and Consulting"
by Len Sperry
(Brunner/Mazel: New York)
[HF 5548.8 .S6258 1996]

"Mental health professionals are increasingly having to consult with various kinds of organizations - a result of changes wrought by managed care, corporate downsizing, and expanding technology. Given these new realities, this book serves as an indispensable guide for translating clinical skills into an organizational setting.

The author has crafted a book that introduces these new realities and helps clinicians negotiate their way to a successful practice by interacting in a corporate setting. It includes a thorough analysis of contemporary economic and societal trends, the different kinds of responses to them, and the role corporate therapy and consultation plays in promoting a viable work environment - no matter what the external variables. The text provides a clear, cogent description of the hierarchy of intervention processes from contracting, assessing, and planning to effecting meaningful organization change."

"Group Model Building: Facilitating Team Learning Using System Dynamics"
by Jac A.M. Vennix
(John Wiley and Sons: Chichester, UK)
[HD 30.23 .V47 1996]

"This book is about increasing team performance. If focuses on building system dynamics models when tacking a mix of interrelated strategic problems to enhance team learning, foster consensus, and create commitment. The book is intended to be applied in the organizations of today. As the "command and control" organization evolves into one of decision-making teams, so these teams have become the critical building blocks upon which the performance of the organization depends. The team members face an increased complexity of decision making with the interrelation of several strategic problems.

What this means is that people have different views of the situation and will define problems differently. However, research shows that this can in fact be very productive if and when people learn from each other in order to build a shared perspective. Learning in this way might prove to be the only sustainable competitive advantage for organizations in the future."

"Family Business: Human Dilemmas in the Family Firm"
by Manfred F.R. Kets de Vries
(International Thomson Business Press: London)
[HD 62.25 .K48 1996]

"In this monograph the author shows how understanding the dynamics of the family business will improve its survival rate. The book delves into the motives, ideals, drives and resistances of the people who make up the family business, and explores the difficulties involved in establishing a balance between family and business life."

Business Booklist [1997 - 20]

On March 6, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library has obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"The Industrial Craftsworker: Skill, Managerial Strategies and Workplace Relationships"
by Peter Cook
(Mansell: London)
[HD 8039 .A82 G734 1996]

"This is a study of industrial craftsworkers and their skills, and also a study of two important linked sets of relationships: between craftsworkers and other industrial workers, and between craftsworkers and managers. Because of their skill and all its implications, craftsworkers are both collaborators and antagonists within each relationship. They are an important dynamic force in technological and organizational development in industry, owing to their apparently contradictory positions and behaviour in relation to managers and other workers.

At the heart of this book are two historically based case studies of automobile factory workers in the United States and Britain, providing new insights into craftsworkers' behaviour and relationships with other workers and with managers and their workplace strategies."

"Transforming Organizations Through Groupware"
edited by Peter Lloyd and Roger Whitehead
(Springer: London)
[HD 66 .T73 1996]

"Lotus Notes is one of the most successful and versatile groupware products on the market today and is used widely in both large and small organizations. This book contains a selection of carefully chosen case studies which illustrate the implementational, organizational and commercial consequences of using Lotus Notes. These case studies have been chosen for their international appeal and, unlike other books on Lotus Notes, concentrate on the added value that can be gained by using Notes - rather than on the technical aspects of how to make the software work."

"Effective Benchmarking - Learning from the Best"
by Mohamed Zairi
(Chapman and Hall: London)
[HD 62.15 .Z35 1996]

"Benchmarking has truly revolutionized the culture of businesses in the West and the way in which organizations are structured and managed. This book provides the reader with inside knowledge about the application and workability of the concept of benchmarking in different industrial contexts. It takes a practical approach, including case studies in benchmarking applications from a cross-section of industry and commerce, and promotes state-of-the-art thinking and innovation through the use of benchmarking."

"International Trade Policy"
by Nigel Grimwade
(Routledge: London)
[HF 1411 .G719 1996]

"The last decade has been witness to far-reaching and significant developments in international trade policy. At the multilateral level of trade these have included the conclusion of the Urugary Round of trade negotiations and the creation of the World Trade Organization. At the regional level this liberalism has been paralleled by the expansion and development of regional trading blocs. This monograph provides extensive, in-depth coverage of the theoretical and policy considerations, both old and new, which underlie these developments. The topics covered include: key theoretical and policy issues; the issues which govern many current trade disputes; the central issues involved in setting up regional trading areas; trade-related investment measures and the developing world; and the future agenda of multilateral trade negotiations."

"Corporate Strategy and Business Planning"
by Roger Bennett
(Pitman Publishing: London)
[HD 2741 .B46 1996]

"Strategic management is a difficult and even contentious subject with a voluminous literature and much disagreement among those actice in the field. This book attempts to unravel the complexities of current debates on strategic processes and seeks to present and explain the concepts, techniques, frameworks and methodologies of strategic management and business planning in a useful, straightforward and understandable way.

It gives all the essential information needed to identify central issues in strategic management and planning and to determine the best approaches to strategic problems at the corporate, functional and operational levels. It establishes that the study of strategic management develops analytical abilities, conceptual skills, sensitivity to the wider business environment, understanding of conventional (and not so conventional) management theories, decision making potential, and awareness of the importance of people in facilitating the introduction of change."

by Salih N. Neftci

The interest in dynamic pricing models is increasing due to their applicability to practical situations. Business Booklist [1997 - 22]

On March 19, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"Strategic Decision Making: Multiobjective Decision Analysis with Spreadsheets"
by Craig W. Kirkwood
(Duxbury Press: Belmont, CA)
[HD 30.28 .K57 1997]

"This book will help you acquire the analytic and quantitative analysis skills needed to make strategically critical decisions in the business world. The author focuses on practical, tested approaches based on sound decision making principles. These approaches have been applied to management decisions for over two decades, and now you can apply them yourself without having to learn complex theory or master specialized software. An abundance of practical applications and problem solving activities clarifies the subject and builds decision making skills. And while you don't need to learn complex theory to use these methods, the theory is there should you wish to pursue it.

To help you understand how to analyze decisions with multiple objectives while using spreadsheets, the author introduces concepts through clear explanations and Microsoft Excel instructions. Examples and exercises focus on such strategic applications as new product development, computer system selection, corporate goal setting, facility site selection, production planning, procurement strategies, research and development portfolio selection, and product improvement budget allocation."

"Gender, Power and Organisation: A Psychological Perspective"
by Paula Nicolson
(Routledge: London)
[HD 6054 .N53 1996]

"Women in western society have entered the workplace in increasing numbers only since the 1950s, and this entry has been rapid. This monograph is an examination of the psychological impact of the work setting on professional women, which has become a major site of gender politics over the last twenty years. This text, however, is not primarily about the political and social challenge of inequality of numbers, but about the psychological consequences of this gender imbalance for senior and middle ranking women in management and the professions."

by Edna Murphy

Technology (e-mail, fax, the Internet, affordable PCs) has made it realistic and possible, the need to retain specialist and scarce skills demand it, and the need to respond fast and flexibly to market changes has made it necessary. Companies are therefore implementing flexitime, job-sharing, teleworking and 'virtual office' solutions. Therefore, a greater emphasis is placed upon exchange rates than is traditionally the case."

Special features of the book include an extensive review and summary of relevant research literature, extensive coverage of a variety of different nationalities and cultures, and a direct comparison between Japan and United States. Business Booklist 1997 - 26

On April 2, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library has obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"Brazil in the 21st Century"
by Jaime Rotstein
(Espaco e Tempo: Rio de Janeiro)
[HD 9502 .B72 R6813 1996]

"If there is one word that is repeated in the four corners of the world, that word is undoubtedly "globalization." Customs, habits, and consumer preferences have become standardized. The same solutions are offered for different problems. Today, our planet is our laboratory, and one of the most controversial concepts within this new reality is "sustainable development". In this book the author calls our attention to different approaches to the energy issue in Brazil. In his view, the country should no longer follow the models imposed from outside; rather, it must begin to seek its own road in the use of clean and renewable energy. The struggle to defend his ideas began when the author was a member of the Brazilian National Energy Commission. There, he ardently defended the National Fuel Alcohol Program. His struggle continues in his presentation here, with compelling arguments on hydroeletric power, natural gas, solar energy, and the problems of housing, public transportation, science and technology, environmental management, and a new start on development."

"Violence on the Job"
edited by Gary R. VandenBos and Elizabeth Q. Bulatao
(American Psychological Association: Washington, DC)
[HF 5549.5 .E43 V546 1996]

"Homicide is now the second most common cause of death in the U.S. workplace. This monograph is part of the effort to promote scientific investigation and broaden public awareness of the growing problem of workplace violence. Contributing authors analyze the problem and describe the most recent violence prevention and response programs for the modern workplace. Covered are programs instituted in advance of corporate downsizing, programs designed to respond to violence in health-care settings, and the employee assistance program used by the U.S. Postal Service."

"Leading Economic Controversies of 1996"
edited by Edwin Mansfield
(W.W. Norton and Company: New York)
[HC 106.82 .L4 1996]

"This text is a carefully selected collection of thirty brief articles and speeches by influential economists and policy makers. The selections are grouped into ten topical categories, each preceded by a brief introduction and followed by numerous questions for analysis. This 1996 edition features completely new sections on welfare reform, economic growth, antitrust policy, and fiscal reform. Designed especially for use in principles courses, the book will spark classroom discussion and student interest on some of the most hotly debated contemporary economic issues of the day."

"Visual Merchandising and Store Design - Workbook"
by Greg M. Gorman
(ST Publications: Cincinnati, OH)
[HF 5429 .G67 1996]

"The purpose of this workbook is to introduce the concept of store design from a design direction. It is intended for students and store owners. It allows the reader to fully understand all aspects of the retail store requirements and how they all have an effect on the final product, the store.

The only way to start a store design concept is to fully understand the merchandise. Once that is defined, it is time to focus on the customer, location demographically as well as specific location and overall store identity or image. Once defined, the real fun begins with adding great merchandising or what the author calls 'Visual Excitement.' The visual excitement is what supports and in many situations becomes the store image and identity which the customer is exposed to from a total shopping environment experience."

Business Booklist 1997 - 28

On April 8, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"The Service Economy: A Geographical Approach"
by Sven Illeris
(John Wiley and Sons: Chichester, UK)
[HD 9980.5 .I5 1996]

"Services dominate the modern economy. This controversial and important book reviews research into the development and future of the service economy. The author synthesises not only English language research on the nature and function of services, but also introduces the lessor known but equally important work done on services by researchers in other lanugages which often reaches surprising and challenging conclusions. While the emphasis is on producer servicies in the western world, due consideration is also given to the role and signifiance of personal and household services which have been frequently ignored in the literature. The approach adopted is geographical and macro-economic and among the topics discussed are the nature and classification of service activities, the role and importance of services in the overall economy and the increasing importance of services in regional development and international trade."

"Work It Out: Clues for Solving People Problems at Work"
by Sandra Krebs Hirsh
(Davis-Black Publishing: Palo Alto, CA)
[HD 42 .H57 1996]

"Whether you're a consultant, manager, team member, or an individual contributor, this book offers a clear understanding of how personality differences play out in the world of work, with practical suggestions for overcoming these differences to obtain enhanced performance. This book is highly recommended to all those interested in harnessing the power of differences for their organization or their team."

"Beyond the Next Wave: Imagining the Next Generation of Customers"
by Glen Peters
(Pitman Publishing: London)
[HD 30.28 .P48 1996]

"A corporate perspective on the future has never been more vital. The reward for success: market dominance. The price of failure; market oblivion. Is your present company thinking more about the future than the past, or even the present? Get to the next generation of customers before your competitors. Imagine a science which wouuld allow you to anticipate what your customers will be like in five, ten or twenty years' time. Imagine a science that would help you to consider whole new groups of customers for products and services not yet in existence. Impossible? This science exists. It is called Scenario Planning. It gives you a management perspective on the future; a valuable insight into the markets, customers and opportunities of tomorrow. This book combines the latest management technique of scenario planning with a compelling vision of the business environment of the future; giving you an insightful understanding of the drivers of change."

"The Politics of Management Knowledge"
edited by Stewart Clegg and Gill Palmer
(Sage Publications: London)
[HD 30.55 .P65 1996]

"The notion that management knowledge is universal, culture-neutral, readily transferable to any country or situation, has come under mounting challenge. This text goes beyond such "broad-brush" assertions to explore in detail the relations between management knowledge, power and practice in a world where globalization highlights, rather than obscures, the locally specific character of many management recipes.

The book recognizes the political nature of management knowledge, as a discourse produced from, and reproducing, power processes within and between organizations. This theme underpins discussion of the ways in which management ideas and practices 'produce' managers of a particular kind - 'man of enterprise', bureaucrat, heroic leader. Critical examinations of certain current management theories - lean production, excellence, entrepreneurship - illuminate the myriad modes in which relations of power intermingle with relations of knowledge."

Business Booklist 1997 - 29

On April 9, 1997, the staff of the Springs Business Library obtained the following monographs for your reading enjoyment:

"Firm Objectives, Controls and Organization:
The Use of Information and the Transfer of Knowledge within the Firm"
by Gunnar Eliasson
(Kluwer Academic Publishers: Dordrecht: The Netherlands)
[HD 30.2 .E44 1996]

"The actual organization and use of information systems in the U.S., European and Japanese firms are investigated and compared with the theoretical conclusion. Finally, following the experimental evolution of the information products over the past twenty years, the results indicate that information and communication firms are now beginning to offer the kind of business information systems the analysis predicted."

"Antisocial Behavior in Organizations"
by Robert Giacalone and Jerald Green
(Sage Publications: Thousand Oaks, CA)
[HF 5549.5 .E43 A58 1997]

"This intriguing volume provides an understanding of the various forms of antisocial behavior in the workplace and how they can be identified and managed - if not prevented altogether. This monograph includes an analysis of the role of frustration in antisocial behavior and discusses issues such as employee revenge, aggression, lying, theft, and sabotage. Whistle-blowing, litigation, and filing claims are also explored as types of behavior that may be considered antisocial even though their stated goal is perhaps prosocial. The book concludes by making connections between antisocial behavior and organizational climate - addressing the need for modification in the workplace to reduce antisocial behavior."

"Watching the Watchers: Corporate Governance for the 21st Century"
by Robert A.G. Monks and Nell Minow
(Blackwell Business: Cambridge, MA)
[HD 2745 .M66 1996]

"What is corporate goverance? It is the relationship among various participants in determining the direction and performance of corporations. The primary participants are (1) the shareholders, (2) the management (led by the chief executive officer), and (3) the board of directors. In this book, the authors will devote a chapter to each leg of this corporate "tripod." Other participants include the employees, customers, suppliers, creditors, and the community. Their interests and impact are reflected in this book as well."

"Exchange Rate Parity for Trade and Development: Theory, Tests, and Case Studies"
by Pan A. Yotopoulos
(Cambridge University Press)
[HG 3877 .Y68 1996]

"This monograph extends recent theories of incomplete markets to investigate empirically the appropriate balance between market and state in trade relations between developed and developing countries. The author concludes that government intervention in foreign exchange and trade is necessary in developing countries in the early stages of development and inevitably decreases as development progresses. More specifically, free currency markets are shown to have an inherent distortion that leads underdeveloped countries to systematically misallocate resources. Rationing the foreign exchanges prevents a "soft-currency distortion" that commonly afflicts developing countries and can turn comparative-advantage trade into competitive-devaluation trade, with severe losses of income and welfare. It is found that the level of underdevelopment narrowly circumscribes and conditions the extent to which free-market, free-trade, laissez-faire policies can be beneficial to developing countries, which is contrary to the mainstream policy paradigm as currently applied."

"Escape from the Market: Negotiating Work in Lancashire"
by Michael Huberman
(Cambridge University Press)
[HD 8039 .T42 G755 1996]

"At the outset of the industrial revolution, the Lancashire labor market was a model of thoroughgoing competition. Wages adjusted quickly and smoothly to changes in the demand for and supply of labor. Within two generations, however, workers and firms had retreated from the market. Instead of busting wages, firms paid fixed rates; instead of breaking ties on short notice, workers sought longer-term associations. Social norms - doing the right thing - protected and preserved the new labor-market arrangements. This book explains the causes and effects of changes in the labor market in the context of new developments in labor economics and new research in social and economic history."

"Total Business Design"
by Neil Farmer and Bob Lankester
(John Wiley and Sons: Chichester: UK)
[HD 58.8 .F368 1996]

"The premise behind this book is extremely simple and very fundamental. It is that executives and other business 'influencers' should be trained as professional business 'designers' and change managers, working in 'learning' organizations. The authors argue that a new, much more professional, cadre of business people will arise from this process. These people will be confident enough to recognise that the primary role of new managers is to get the 'design' of the business right, and that all major business success and failure flows primarily from this design. No longer will uncertain executives hide behind management consultants. Indeed, the management consultancy industry will undergo major change, as their clients acquire business design skills and create a very different corporate world."

"The Evolution of International Business"
by Geoffrey Jones
(Routledge: London)
[HD 2755.5 .J67 1996]
