If you are NOT getting the screen below when you first try
to access a database, you're not getting into the proxy. Please refer to
questions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

1. Did you configure your Netscape browser for
the proxy server?
If you configured your browser right you would see this
screen when you try to access a database.
For directions go to http://www.sc.edu/library/proxy/netscapedir.htm
and follow the direction to the letter.
If you continue to have problems please call Alma Creighton
at 777-2389, or email: almac@mailbox.sc.edu
2. Did you type in your proxy configuration address
correctly?
http://proxy.tcl.sc.edu:8080/tcl.sc.edu.pac
(step number 3 on the Netscape directions, http://www.sc.edu/library/proxy/netscapedir.htm
)
3. Did you reload your browser?
Click on the reload button on the button bar. Sometimes
it might be necessary to restart your browser
or even reboot your computer.
4. Are you using Netscape 6.0?
Netscape 6.0 does not work with the proxy at this time.
Please download an older version, 4.76, until Netscape
issues an updated release of the 6.0 version that will
support the proxy properly.
5. Are you trying to access the library resources
from a business, institution, or computer that has a firewall installed?
You will have to talk to the network administrator of
that site and let them know that the proxy server you are trying to access
uses ports 80 and 8080. They will need to open up those ports to
you in the firewall or you will not be able to use the proxy server.
If you are getting the screen below, please refer to questions
6, 7 and 8:

6. Are you a current USC Columbia student, faculty or
staff with a current ID card? If not, our licenses do not allow you
to use this service. If you are a Columbia student, faculty or staff, but
have an old ID, you will need to go to Russell House and get a new ID before
you will be active in the database.
7. Did you type in your 9 (nine,
NOT 12) digit User name (USCID = social security number) correctly? Be
sure you are typing in your 9 digit social security number for your
User Name.
8. Did you type in you last name correctly? Remember
to type in ONLY your last name (e.g , password=smith) for your password.
If you still can't get in and think you have typed everything correctly
please call Alma Creighton at 777-2389 (Monday-Friday), or
Email: Almac@mailbox.sc.edu
If you get the following error message, then refer to questions
5, 6 and 7 above:
Proxy authorization required
User name authentication is required for using this proxy.
Either your browser does not perform proxy authorization, or your authorization
has failed.
Proxy server at proxy.tcl.sc.edu on port 80
9. Are you using AOL and having difficulty connecting
to the databases? You will need to use AOL to connect to the internet
AND THEN you must minimize your AOL and configure Netscape to access
the proxy server. You must have an external Netscape browser.
See directions for AOL at http://www.sc.edu/library/proxy/aoldir.htm
10. I don't have Netscape on my computer!
Go to the following web site to download the Netscape
browser: http://www.netscape.com/computing/download/index.html
11. I can get into some of the databases but not all
of them, why not?
Two things could cause this problem. First, the
database provider's server might be down. Call Reference at TCL and
ask them to check this for you, or try again later. Second,
your browser may have cached (kept it in memory) the URL incorrectly and
you will need to clear out the browser's cache. The easiest way is
to close your browser and start again.
If you are still having problems please call
