Encyclopedias: Collections and General

Listed here are collections of online reference books. The library also purchases individual titles as electronic books. Search the library catalog to find all that we have. A good starting search in the quick catalog: encyclopedias and a topic word. Then use the Format limit for E-Books. You have to be affiliated with the campus that purchased the electronic book in order to access it online.
  • Britannica Online

    Internet version of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Includes the complete encyclopedia, as well as Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary and the Britannica Book of the Year.

  • Britannica Online - School Edition K-12

    You can search several grade-level encyclopedias as well as magazines, Web sites, and videos. You can also explore Learning Materials, a dictionary and thesaurus, atlases, timelines, and other features -- all at the appropriate grade level.

  • Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia

    Provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries.

  • Gale Virtual Reference Library

  • Oxford Reference

    Fully-indexed, cross-searchable database of over 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press.

  • Credo Reference

    Use to find quick facts, images or background information on various topics in dictionaries, encyclopedias and handbooks.

  • Sage Reference Online

     Includes over 120 handbooks, encyclopedias, and directories primarily in the social sciences.

  • Blackwell Companion to Phonology

    Reference work of essays covering a range of approaches and methodologies to the key phenomena in phonological research. This online version includes sound files and links to external web content.

  • Dictionary of Literary Biography Complete Online

  • Encyclopaedia of Islam, First Edition

    Includes articles on all aspects of the Islamic World.  Our subscription is for the First Edition, published 1913-1936.

  • Encyclopedia of Biomedical Engineering

  • Encyclopedia of Social Work

    Important reference source in the field.

  • Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online

    Contains an overview of the region, a survey of its musical heritage, traditions and themes; and a description of specific musical genres, practices, and performances.  Mostly text, but does have some videos and audio.

  • International Encyclopedia of Education

    This 8 volume set, published in 2010, encompasses all aspects of education.

  • Oxford African American Studies Center

  • Oxford Music (Grove)

    Contains the full text of several music reference works, most importantly Grove Music Online, The Oxford Companion to Music, and The Oxford Dictionary of Music.  It also provides contextual to links to images, sound, and other related web sites.
