    Pre-eminent dictionary of the English language, with authoritative definitions of more than 500,000 words. In addition to current definitions, it traces the development of words. Find out what words meant at different periods.

    Searchable; provides pronunciation, word function, and simple etymology. The thesaurus provides word function and hot-linked synonyms.

  • Oxford Reference

    Fully-indexed, cross-searchable database of over 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press.

  • Dictionary of American Regional English

    Online version of the multi-volume reference work that documents words, phrases, and pronunciations that vary from one place to another place across the United States.  The entries in DARE include regional pronunciations, variant forms, some etymologies, and regional and social distributions of the words and phrases.

  • Lexicons of Early Modern English

    Historical dictionaries & lexical encyclopedias for the period 1480-1702 (Tudor through Restoration periods).

  • Middle English Dictionary

    The print Middle English Dictionary, completed in 2001, has been described as the greatest achievement in medieval scholarship in America. Its 15,000 pages offer a comprehensive analysis of lexicon and usage for the period 1100-1500, based on the analysis of a collection of over three million citation slips, the largest collection of this kind available. This electronic version of the MED preserves all the details of the print MED, but goes far beyond this, by converting its contents into an enormous database, searchable in ways impossible within any print dictionary.

  • Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names

    This database contains a structured vocabulary developed primarily for the field of art history, but with the potential for wide applications in related disciplines such as archeology, history and geography
