Top Databases

  • Engineering Village

The Engineering Village platform provides access to Compendex, the comprehensive database for Engineering research, and Inspec, the premier database for physics and related areas.

  • American Chemical Society Publications - Electronic Journals

Full text access to the American Chemical Society's peer-reviewed research journals in the chemical and related sciences from 1879 to the present.

  • Royal Society of Chemistry - Electronic Journals

This platform provides full text access to all journal content from the Royal Society of Chemistry Publishing.

free RSC Mobile app for iOS (iPad, iPhone and iPod) is now available on iTunes.  For more information go to  http://blogs.rsc.org/technical/2011/09/26/rscmobile/.

  • CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics

Use the Table of Contents on the left to explore different sections of the handbook.

  • Current Chemical Reactions & Index Chemicus

Current Chemical Reactions (CCR) reports over a million synthetic methods from over 100 of the world's leading organic chemistry journals. Each reaction provides complete reaction diagrams, critical conditions, bibliographic data, and author abstracts. The database is text- and substructure-searchable. It should always be searched simultaneously with Index Chemicus. Note that reaction schematics from CCR and compound structures from Index Chemicus are appended to the same literature record.

Additional Databases (alphabetical)

  • Applied Science & Technology Source

Covers a wide variety of applied science specialties—from acoustics and aeronautics, to neural networks and nuclear & civil engineering.

  • ASME - American Society of Mechanical Engineers - Electronic Journals

Not all titles listed by this provider are available to the USC-Columbia campus. USC users can access the full text of only those journals to which the USC Libraries subscribe. Try the PDF or HTML links.   If you are prompted to LOGIN, you should request the article through our Interlibrary Loan service.

  • Conference Papers Index

Conference Papers provides citations to papers and poster sessions presented at major scientific meetings around the world. Subject emphasis since 1995 has been in the life sciences, environmental sciences and the aquatic sciences, while older material also covers physics, engineering and materials science.

  • Conference Proceedings Citation Index

Provides access to the published literature from the most significant conferences, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops, and conventions worldwide.  Coverage begins in 1990 to the present.

  • Derwent Innovations Index

A specialized database for searching U.S. and foreign patents in the areas of chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering.  It merges the value-added patent information from Derwent World Patents Index with the patent citation information from Derwent Patent Citation Index, including backfile data to 1963.

  • Dissertations and Theses

Contains citations, abstracts and possibly full text for over 2 million dissertations and theses. The database accepts over 90 percent of doctoral dissertations in North America.

  • GreenFILE

This freely accessible research database focuses on the relationship between human beings and the environment.

  • IEEE Xplore

Major database for electrical engineering and computer science literature, featuring high-quality content from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Our subscription does not include fulltext access to everything in the database, but to content from IEEE journals, transactions, and magazines published since 1998.

  • NTIS (National Technical Information Service)

Searching for federally funded bibliographic science and technology research information is free on the basic Public Access NTRL website.  For US domestic users, after registering and accepting the "Terms and Conditions of Use" of NTRL you will be able to access the full text PDFs.

  • Oxford Reference

Fully-indexed, cross-searchable database of over 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press.

  • PubMed-Medline (with USC links)

Premier database of worldwide biomedical literature including research, clinical practice, administration, policy issues, and health care services.

  • ScienceDirect

Only those journals to which USC-Columbia subscribes are available full text. Strongest coverage in the sciences, but includes some business, humanities and social science journals.

  • SciFinder Web *Registration Required*

Provides access to the full Chemical Abstracts database with citations to the literature of chemistry and patents, as well as compound information including structure, chemical names, formulas, Registry Numbers and reaction information for organic and organometallic reactions - plus substructure and reaction searching.

First time users:  register for SciFinderAs part of the registration process you'll be sent an email.  Instead of clicking on the link in the email, copy & paste the link into a browser to complete the registration process.

Once you register you can use SciFinder Mobile
