University Libraries - Nancy Pope Rice and Nancy Rice Davis Library Treasure Endowment

Nancy Pope Rice and Nancy Rice Davis Library Treasure Endowment

To allow for the timely acquisition of special and significant items for the University Libraries, the Nancy Pope Rice and Nancy Rice Davis Library Treasure Endowment was established. Funds from this endowment will be used to purchase books and manuscripts for the special collections held by the University Libraries.

Because it is difficult to budget for the unanticipated appearance on the market of library materials from estate sales, book dealers, and other sources, valuable materials are often lost to other repositories. This endowment will permit library staff to move in a timely manner to acquire appropriate educational and literary materials which will strengthen the collections of the University Libraries.

Nancy Rice Davis (Lynch) and her mother, the late Nancy Pope Rice, established this practical fund to support timely and special library acquisitions in honor of the late Dr. George D. Terry. Both donors were actively involved at the University; Nancy Rice graduated in 1931, and Nancy Davis Lynch graduated in 1971.

The first item purchased with funds from the endowment interest was John’s Island Stud by Fairfax Harrison (1750 – 1788) which is in the collection of the South Caroliniana Library.
