The Center for Digital Humanities will host a lecture at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, April 8 in the Moore School of Business' Lumpkin Auditorium.

The featured speaker will be Robert C. Allen, Professor of History and American Studies at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, whose talk is entitled, "Please Step Away from the Screen! How Digital Humanities Can Re-Write Cinema History."

The event, which is free and open to the community, is part of the Center's Future Knowledge: Prospects for a Digital Era lecture series.

The Center for Digital Humanities will host a Digital Brown Bag lecture at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27 in the Thomas Cooper Library Mezzanine Conference Room. Attendees are invited to bring their lunch; coffee will be provided.

The featured speaker is Duncan Buell, Computer Science and Engineering professor at USC. His lecture is entitled, “Work vs. Research: Translating Paradigms of Scholarship from Computer Science to the Humanities.”

Scholars in the humanities who are moving into the digital world are confronting a complex issue: how to balance work on and use of digital tools with “research” in their respective disciplines. Are some scholarly activities real research, while others are “just work”? This is an issue that has been faced in the sciences, where it has been resolved at least in part and relates to the serious issue of “credit” for the creation of digital artifacts. Buell will give his view on how to distinguish work and research, as well as the role of making tools in support of and as part of scholarly disciplinary work.

The Center for Digital Humanities will host another of its "Future Knowledge: Prospects for a Digital Era" lectures on Friday, March 1 at 3:30 p.m. in the Hollings Library Program Room.

The speaker will be Lev Manovich, a professor at the City University of New York Graduate Center. His lecture is entitled, "How to Compare One Million Images? Visualizing Patterns in Art, Games, Comics, Cinema, Web, Print and User-Generated Content."
