Four New Faces

May 12, 2011 5:46 PM

New faces showed up in the Reference Department of Thomas Cooper Library during the 2011 spring semester.   The library hired four librarians to fill vacancies in the reference department.   Brent Appling, Andrea Jarratt, Kathy Snediker and Laurel Baker joined the department to share research and instruction duties with the reference department team.

In January, Brent Appling joined the department.  Brent received his MLIS from the University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science at the end of 2010.  He received his Bachelor of Arts in English in 2007 with a cognate in Sociology and Education also from USC.  Brent held several graduate student positions with University Libraries simultaneously, including Thomas Cooper Library Reference, Collection Development and the South Caroliniana Library.  He and his wife are from the Columbia area, and they have a little one-year-old Gamecock-in-waiting at home.  Brent will be updating and monitoring the reference department Webpages.

Andrea Jarratt joined the reference department in February as a science librarian.  Andrea recently received her MLIS from Dominican University, River Forest, Illinois.  Andrea received her BS in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse.  For a science major, she has an atypical minor in English which makes her an especially versatile reference librarian.  Andrea worked as an assistant in Public Services at Valparaiso University and as an intern at Dominican University Library. She worked as a Chemistry tutor throughout her undergraduate years.  She had the challenging experience of teaching Conversational Business English at Reutlingen University, European School of Business, Reutlingen, Germany, during spring semester in 2008.  Andrea and her husband are originally from Wisconsin, and they are enjoying the beautiful South Carolina weather.

February 1st was the starting date for Kathryn Snediker.  She received her MLIS from the University of South Carolina in 2007, and she received her BA in history from the University of Virginia.  Most recently Kathy served as the Associate Director of Library and Instructional Technology Services at Newberry College, Newberry SC.  She previously served as a part-time librarian and as an intern in Thomas Cooper Library.   She also worked as a library assistant at the Coleman Karesh Law Library at the USC School of Law.  Kathy is originally from the great state of Pennsylvania, but has settled into South Carolina over the past six years.  Kathy will coordinate the LibGuides program for the department.

Laurel Baker has recently rejoined the reference department.   Laurel received her MLIS from the School of Library and Information Science at USC.   Her BA in English is also from USC.  Laurel started out as a graduate student in Thomas Cooper Library.  She has been a major contributor to the work of the library since 1997.  She has much experience in the circulation department, the reference department and the systems department.  We are happy to welcome Laurel back as a seasoned reference librarian.   Laurel is from Nevada but she has called South Carolina home for many years.  Laurel will coordinate the freshman English library instruction program.
