Pages from the Past: A Legacy of Medieval Books in South Carolina Collections

Thomas Cooper Library (Mezzanine Gallery)
Jan 17, 2008 - Mar 31, 2008
The "Pages from the Past" exhibit features more than 90 books and manuscript leaves, ranging from small prayer books and pocket Bibles to lavishly decorated images from massive choir books. They are from collections at the University of South Carolina, Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery, Furman University, Wofford College, the Charleston Library Society, the College of Charleston and Columbia College. Dating from 1125 to 1600, the manuscripts are as aesthetically beautiful as they are historically significant. Dr. Scott Gwara, South Carolina professor of medieval studies and curator of the exhibit. Dr. Gwara's survey of manuscripts across the state and his exhibit are funded in part by a grant from the South Carolina Humanities Council.
