Scottish Literature Lecture with Dr. Corey GibsonHollings Main, Richter Room
Nov 15, 2017 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Please join us for a lecture by Dr. Corey Gibson, Assistant Professor of Modern English Literature at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. His lecture, "'a' wede away': Dispersal Against Continuity in Literature and Song," will take place at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2017, in the Richter Room in Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library.
Dr. Gibson's lecture examines the old song "The Flowers of the Forest," said to have been written for the fallen at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. It follows the title, the central image, and its melody through a diverse constellation of modern literary incarnations, from the first genteel drawing-room sets of the mid-eighteenth century, to the cosmic avant-garde pastoral of Hugh MacDiarmid, to the violent masculine pathologies of Robin Jenkins, and to the wry nihilism of Muriel Spark.
