Provenance

John Kenneth Adams, School of Music Distinguished Professor Emeritus, established the J. K. Adams Fund for French Music for the Music Library in 2003. The fund benefits the library through the preservation and annual purchase of other rare French music editions. Professor Adams has donated numerous editions from his own collection and other items acquired during his travels to Europe as well as a collection of personal photo albums and scrapbooks.

In November 2004, Professor Adams presented a lecture recital in the Music Library entitled "Monsieur Croche, The Dilettante Hater: A Talk with Music". The event celebrated Adams's gift of a rare first edition (1921) of Claude Debussy's volume of music criticism, Monsieur Croche, Antidilettante. The volume, on Edogawa Japanese paper, is number 15 of a print run of 50 and includes an otherwise unknown portrait of the composer. Professor Adams also gave the library a limited-edition series of copperplate engravings (1930) by Bernard Naudin (1876-1976).
