For the people march: For MLK Jr.

Produced by SC-ETV, this episode of “For the People” aired on January 23, 1976. It highlights a January 15 march in Columbia, SC to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Speakers include Rev. Matthew McCollom (President of the NAACP SC Conference), Isaac Williams (SC Field Director for the NAACP), and Redfern II. Many of the marchers advocate for Dr. King’s birthday to be made a national holiday. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was observed as a federal holiday for the first time in 1986.

The South Carolina Arts Commission collection consists of films and videos collected by The Media Arts Center, which promoted visual literacy and supported media artists and media arts across a ten-state southeastern region. This collection includes well-known classics, locally produced independent films, and quirky, experimental short-subjects.
