LIBR 100: Information Literacy

For Spring 2012 we are offering a 1 credit course called LIBR 100: Information Literacy. Classes meet twice a week for the first 8 weeks of the semester in the Thomas Cooper Library. Specifics of each class will vary by instructors but students will learn how to:

Analyze a topic in order to construct a research question and effective search statements

Identify the nature and extent of information needed in order to answer a research question

Apply search methods in order to effectively locate and retrieve information from the library catalog, article databases, internet, and other information retrieval tools

Examine and compare information from various sources in order to evaluate reliability, validity, accuracy, authority, timeliness, and point of view or bias

Examine ethical and legal issues surrounding information in order to compile, organize, and present information effectively and appropriately

 

Three sections are being offered:

LIBR 100, Section 001 meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 11:15-12:05
LIBR 100, Section 002 meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:10-11:00
LIBR 100, Section 003 meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00-2:50 (This section will emphasize science resources.)

The Fine Print: LIBR100 -- Information Literacy. (1) Introduction to methods and ethics of information research, with emphasis on analyzing and defining information needs and resources, creating and refining search strategies, evaluating resources, and synthesizing and citing information. Admission restricted to undergraduates.
