Sources: The Wall

Building upon the research compiled by University Archivist Elizabeth West and history major Hannah Oakley, graduate students Elizabeth Oswald, JoAnn Zeise, and Jennifer Betsworth met weekly to conduct a survey of the wall, which consisted of evaluating the overall structural integrity and important architectural features. This survey was then compiled into a database and survey report, which also listed recommendations for preservation.

Other important sources consulted included records and minutes from the board of trustees. For the history of the process of handmaking bricks, useful sources include Thomas McGrath’s “Notes on the Manufacture of Hand-made Bricks,” published in the Bulletin for the Association of Preservation Technology (1979), and Harvie Jones’s Historic Houses: Bricks and Mortar Companion, which was published by the Alabama Historical Commission in 2001.
