Slavery at South Carolina College, 1801–1865:

The Foundations of the University of South Carolina

Sources: Students & Slavery

Daniel Hollis provided the majority of information for the Students & Slavery web page in his works University of South Carolina, Volume 1: South Carolina College (1951) and Remembering the Days: An Illustrated History of the University of South Carolina (1982). The appendix to Maximilian LaBorde’s History of South Carolina College (1884) was particularly helpful, especially in finding the names of graduates who signed the Ordinance of Secession. The appendix lists every student, years of graduation, the board of trustee members, and professors, along with the subjects they taught. Walter Edgar’s South Carolina: A History (1998) situates the college history within the larger scope of South Carolina history. In Carolina Voices: Two Hundred Years of Student Experiences (2001), Carolyn Matalene and Katherine Reynolds use student correspondences and letters about students to get a more detailed picture of campus life.
