About the Book

Musick for Allan Ramsay’s Collection of 71 Scots Songs is a remarkably small yet highly prized volume of musical settings for selections from the Scottish poet’s Tea-Table Miscellany. The book is part of the G. Ross Roy Collection of Burnsiana & Scottish Literature within the University of South Carolina’s Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections.

For an in-depth discussion of the Musick book’s known history and the context in which it was published, please read the Kirsteen McCue’s introductory essay.

The digital facsimile of the Musick book was produced by the staff of University of South Carolina Digital Collections. In July 2012, Travis Byrd scanned the book as 600ppi, 24-bit color TIFFs using an Avision FB6280E bookedge scanner with Avision software. Matthew W. Shepherd (MLIS 2012) processed the TIFFs to JPEG, cropped the access copies, and uploaded the JPEGs to CONTENTdm in March 2013. Shepherd created the metadata for the collection using the Western States Best Practices Dublin Core format and uploaded it as tab-delimited files with the access images. The TIFFs will be maintained as archival masters on a SAN server, backed up to DVD and tape. This project could not have been completed without the help of Tony Branch, systems administrator for the CONTENTdm database.

Kirsteen McCue, University of Glasgow, W. Ormiston Roy Fellow 2006, graciously provided the historical essay that accompanies this digital facsimile. Matthew W. Shepherd created this website using HTML5 and JavaScript within the University Libraries web template. Elizabeth Sudduth, Director of the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, provided guidance for the digital facsimile’s metadata and the website’s design and content.
