Herb Hartsook of South Carolina Political Collections (SCPC) suggested the creation of this digital collection to be selected from the Papers of William Jennings Bryan Dorn. Debra Davendonis-Todd of SCPC selected the audio clips and created the metadata for each in an Excel spread sheet. Debra thoroughly enjoyed listening to speeches and oral histories from one of South Carolina’s greatest orators in order to make selections for "In His Own Words." She chose audio excerpts that capture Dorn's ability to both inform and entertain his audiences.
The metadata records follow the Western States Best Practices Dublin Core format. Original audio recordings were transferred from audio tape to compact disc, edited by SCPC for length using Audacity and retained as mp3 files. She scanned the photographs on a flatbed Epson Expression 1000XL Photo scanner, using Silverfast scanning software, as greyscale JPEGs at 24-bit and 300 dpi. She uploaded the audio files and metadata to the CONTENTdm server. Debra also created a home page for the collection with technical assistance from Digital Collections. The work could also not have been done without the help of Lori Schwartz, Randy Heard, and Tony Branch of the Systems Department, who is the systems administrator for the CONTENTdm database and helps to manage the computers and scanners in the Digital Collections Department. Patricia Sasser and Kate Boyd of Digital Collections provided training and assistance throughout the project.
