During and after Robert Burns’s lifetime, newspapers around the world published Burns’s poems and also articles celebrating the famed Scottish poet’s life, including advertisements, reviews, biographical information, and descriptions of anniversary celebrations. This digital collection compiles late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Burns-related newspaper appearances from the G. Ross Roy Collection of Burnsiana & Scottish Literature, held by the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections at the University of South Carolina.
Charles Knight (USC, 2012) worked on this project as part of an English Independent Study course supervised by Elizabeth Sudduth, Director of the Irvin Department, and Dr. Tony Jarrells of USC’s English Department. Charles Knight and Digital Collections Project Manager Ashley Knox completed the digitization of the newspapers, created the metadata, and uploaded the digital objects into the content management system. Knight scanned the items on the Zeutschel OS 14000 A0 scanner and created metadata using Dublin Core best practices. Matthew W. Shepherd created the landing page. This project could not have been completed without the help of Tony Branch, systems administrator for the CONTENTdm database.
