The mission of the Society for the Study of Southern Literature is encapsulated in its name. We aim to promote reading, writing, and dialogue about the literature of the American South and the cultures from which that literature has sprung. We pursue our goals in a variety of ways, including the sponsoring of conferences and other discussion forums, the publication of scholarship, and the awarding of prizes for excellence in southern literary study. Anyone interested in these goals is welcome to join the Society.

  • Bibliography of Southern Literature: an ongoing bibliographic record of all books and articles by and about southern writers. Headquartered at Mississippi State University, the project produces an annual annotated bibliography published by Mississippi Quarterly.
  • The Biannual SSSL Conference: a conference with papers and discussion panels–and other activities–at different sites throughout the South. [Call for Papers]
  • Current and Recent SSSL Newsletters: The Newsletter informs the members of the SSSL as to what the Society and their colleagues are doing and offers an ongoing bibliography of notable scholarship published in southern studies.
  • SSSL Conference Panels: the SSSL sponsors lively and provocative panels for meetings of leading literary conferences, including the Modern Language Association, South Central Modern Language Association, and the American Literature Association.
