The January 7th issue of Statehouse Report included this photo with the caption:
“Can you guess which former South Carolina governor is speaking at an inauguration and when it was?”
Read on for the answer…
Olin D. Johnston speaks at his inaugural ceremony in 1943. This was to be Johnston’s second term as Governor of South Carolina, his first term spanning 1935 to 1939. He had taken time off to make two unsuccessful runs for the U.S. Senate before being reelected Governor in 1942.
His Senate aspirations remained, however, and in 1944 he ran again and defeated the incumbent, Ellison “Cotton Ed” Smith (1866-1944), in the Democratic primary. Johnston resigned as Governor on January 3, 1945 and was sworn into the Senate that same day. He served for twenty years until his death in 1965.
The Johnston papers are one of almost one hundred collections held by South Carolina Political Collections at the University of South Carolina.
