Last night, in honor of Congress Week, we inaugurated our Politics on Film festival with a screening of the 1939 classic, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Directed by Frank Capra and starring Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur, the film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won for Best Original Story. Claude Rains and Harry Carey almost steal the show with strong supporting roles.
This screening inaugurated the projection system in the Hollings Library programming room and everyone that attended enjoyed the setting, the system worked perfectly, and the chairs proved very comfortable even over the duration of a 130 minute film and additional time for discussion of the movie.
Thanks to everyone who joined us for the occasion. We hope to have a similarly enthusiastic group for our 4:30 Oct. 20 screening of the wonderful Ken Burns documentary, The Congress. Food and drink are allowed for this event and pizza and soda will be provided the first 20 people.
