Check out our Chalkboard! Introducing Dave Robbins from the Trenholm Artists Guild

Robbins, in the process of creating “Resilient.”

This semester we are thrilled to be showcasing the work of painter and USC landscape artist, Dave Robbins. In addition to creating the fifth work in the Music Library Trenholm Artists Guild Mural Series, a number of his paintings will also be on display in the Music Library this Fall.

About his chalkboard mural, entitled “Resilient,” Robbins writes: “This mural represents overcoming the many challenges that we are faced with throughout life. Whether it is tragedy and turmoil, or simply minor hurdles that challenge our lives, eventually we are able to step back and appreciate our perseverance and bathe in its tranquility.”

Resilient will be on display in the Music Library through December 2017.

At the beginning of each semester we are honored to have an artist from the Trenholm Artists Guild create a unique work for our chalkboard and this semester is no exception. The Spring 2016 featured artist is Jim Dukes and his mural is the second in our Music Library Trenholm Artists Guild Mural Series.

Dukes’ art is focused on the healing that its creation can bring. Faced with personal experiences with Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress, Dukes “chose the path of redefining his life through art.” In addition to working on his own artistic works he is also engaged in helping others to find a path to recovery through the visual arts.  In 2016 he will be the Director of Healing Arts at the Big Barn Retreat, a non-profit that “provides a variety of free services for veterans and their families…with a focus on treating and coping with post-traumatic stress disorder.”

Dukes creates his photography-based art using his Droid Maxx cell phone and free or low cost editing software. In his Artist Statement he writes, “My goal remains to inspire others in similar situations to choose any art outlet at their disposal and just start creating.”

Dukes’ mural will be on display in the Music Library through the end of Spring semester. A selection of his works are also currently being featured near the Music Library entrance. More information on Jim and his works can be found on his website at http://www.jjdphoto2art.com/.

As part of the Music Library’s growing collaboration with the Trenholm Artists Guild (TAG), we are thrilled to introduce a new series of original art works entitled The Music Library Trenholm Artists Guild Mural Series. As part of this series each semester a new original work will be created by a local artist on our stairwell chalkboard!

The series opening work, currently on display, was contributed by TAG member Lee Breuer and is entitled Dreams Denote Success. As a caption Breuer adds, “One must dream in order to achieve true success.” We are so excited to be hosting this one-of-a-kind work for the semester and hope you’ll stop by to see it in its entirety.
